As we continued on with our healthy eating unit we turned our focus towards food groups.
I had the students recall what we had learned so far about healthy eating. Have them brainstorm anything they may know about food groups!
We read an amazing story about food groups: Showdown At The Food Pyramid by Rex Barron! We debriefed after the story and had a further discussion about what food groups are and why they're important!
ACTIVITY TIME!
The students were in a big circle, each with a food card that belongs to a particular food group (you could use fake foods if you have them at your school).
In the middle of the circle was 5 hula hoops: Fruit, Vegetable, Meat, Grain, Dairy. I wanted to do add something extra, so I put a garbage can in the middle, for students that had a junk food card.
We went around the circle, and the students one by one put their food into the food group that their food belonged too.
