Experiment One:
Materials:
- Palmolive Soap
- Bowl
- Water
- Pepper (germs)
Working in small groups each student had a bowl full of water and pepper. They were asked what they think might happen if they stick their finger into the bowl full of pepper? When they stuck their finger in the pepper stuck to their finger! This shows how the germs stick to us and are all over.
We added more pepper to the bowl, and this time we brainstormed what might happen to the germs if we put a soapy finger into the bowl? When they stuck their soapy finger into the bowl, the pepper instantly moves away from the finger and to the outside of the bowl!
This experiment shows how important it is to use soap when we wash our hands to make sure we get all those germs off!
Experiment Two:
Materials:
- Cinnamon or Cocoa Powder
- Soap
- Sink
- Paper Towel
Working in small groups, have students wet their hands and rub the cinnamon or cocoa powder all over them making a sticky mess. Have them rinse their hands under water without using any soap. When they are done get them to wipe their hand on a paper towel to see if there are any germs left behind (there will be). Have them brainstorm what they could do to get those germs off completely! Have them wash their hands again, this time with soap, and wipe their hand on the paper towel. Are there any germs this time?
