The first unit I taught in my grade 4 practicum was poetry. I was nervous for this because I was never a big fan of poetry as a student. However, after planning out my unit, I was pretty excited to begin teaching it!
Unit Outline:
1. Poetry ToolBox
2. Acrostic Poem
3. Emotion Poem
4. Poetic Elements Worksheet
5. Haiku Poem
6. Diamante Poem
7. Parody Poem
8. Limerick Poem
9. Shape Poem
Our success criteria for this unit was:
I can: use the correct poetic format for the poem I am writing
I can: use at least one poetic element in my poem
I can: write my poem neatly
I can: use correct spelling in my poem
I can: make sure my poem makes sense and tells a story
If you want to take a look at the lesson plans and the handouts I used throughout this unit, check out my Google Drive.
The last thing we did was create a SUPER GOOD COPY of our favourite poem. Students complete Two Stars & A Wish with a peer and made edits to their chosen poem. They then got a piece of blank white paper and were to write their poem on the paper (using the proper format) and create imagery to go with their poem. The goal was to have little to no white left on the paper.
Lastly they did a presentation of their final poem where they had to:
1. Use a loud clear voice
2. State the type of poem they chose
3. State the title of their poem
4. Read their poem
5. Discuss their poetic element
6. Show us their creation
7. Answer one question from the class
I laminated all of their super good copies and bound them to create a class poetry book!
